The Teacher's Training College, Nicosia Cyprus
In 1949 the British colonial authorities in Cyprus decided to construct a central Teachers' Training College in Nicosia, as part of their continuing campaign to use schools to foster a Cypriot rather than Greekk or Turkish identiy. By that time Harrison was based in Lapethos in northern Cyprus, but had designed no puibl;ic building on the island since his plans for a new Governemnt House had been rejected in 1933. (pg72)
Like the Palesstine Archaeological Museum and the most recen colonial public buildings in Cyprus, the Teachers' Training College drew on a range of local historical and vernacular styles: broad Ottoman eaves and kiosks were combined with arcades of pointed arches, roofs with semi-circular village tiles, and a series of visible from many different perspectives provided
a strong vertical accent to the composition. (pg73)
